OBJECTIVE
A significant component of any City’s exterior lighting is its street lighting.

In Los Angeles, with the move over the last decade to change out all of the City’s drop lens HID cobra heads to full cut-off LED, surely this has had a positive impact on light pollution in the region.

Has this translated into noticeably less skyglow?

Have other factors altered the light pollution equation in the post-LED revolution era?

Join us to learn some of the surprising answers to these questions and more from experts on the topic.

SPEAKERS
Andy Powell, Lighting Design Alliance, Principal
From his architectural engineering education to his professional experience as a lighting designer and electrical engineer for over 32 years, Andy has acquired a rare set of skills which serve him well in his capacity as Vice President and studio director at LDA. Thorough communication during all phases of design and construction is vitally important to the success of any project. In addition to careful coordination with the owner and architect, Andy’s unique background and experience allows him to communicate equally well with other technical consultants.

Pete Strasser, Technical Director, International Dark-Sky Assoc.
An astral photographer since age five, Pete has long been interested in the practical and aesthetic effects of light. His degree in plant pathology from the University of California, Davis, imparted detailed insight in the composition and effects of different light sources. This knowledge proved invaluable during his work as IDA’s Technical Advisor and now as Technical Director. In this role, Pete oversees both the IDA Fixture Seal of Approval program, which certifies compliant lighting products as “dark sky friendly,” and the new Community Friendly Outdoor sports Lighting program. Pete served on the Illuminating Engineering Society of North American (IESNA) – IDA joint Model Lighting Ordinance Committee, for which he received the IESNA President’s Award. Currently, Pete serves as Liaison Officer for the IDA to The CIE Division 4 Outdoor Lighting committees.
