Beacon Award winner Patrick Quigley, IALD speaks of his body of work, his successes, follies, and the Choreographic Method

IES/LA presented its first-ever “Beacon Award” for lifetime achievement at last year’s Lumen West Awards to lighting designer Patrick Quigley, IALD. Scott Hatton of Oculus Light Studio and Erin Erdman of eSquared Lighting will interview Patrick, exploring his work and the influence of his “Choreographic Method.” They will certainly extract a few of his entertaining stories about the lighting world we all share! Patrick will respond to the interviewer and audience questions throughout the interview.

Patrick pursued an unusual independent study option in Environmental Design at the University of Utah, studying how color, shape, and light affect perception. Extensive experience in performance lighting added strong technical skills to the formal architectural design and behavioral science training he received. After working with iconic Lighting Designers Jules Horton and then Raymond Grenald, he opened Patrick B. Quigley & Associates (PBQA) in 1985 and ran the well-known lighting design firm for 34 years. Currently, Patrick is the Lighting Design Principal for landscape architecture firm Design Workshop’s eight offices. Quigley has lit national memorials, palaces, city master plans, sports arenas, Olympic venues, and super cruise ships, among many others. His body of work and contribution to the built environment have been recognized by both the United States House of Representatives and the American Institute of Architects.
